She is followed by the rest of the choir dressed in white gowns, carrying candles, singing traditional Swedish songs.
What is Sankta Lucia?
Sankta Lucia is a well-established event in the Swedish calendar leading up to Christmas. It originates from both pagan and Christian traditions of bringing people together for music, nourishment, and celebration of light. It’s a delightful, relaxing event to enjoy in the lead up to Christmas. Sankta Lucia was introduced to Hexham by Katrin Auld who grew up in Sweden, but lives in Hexham. It has been performed over five previous Christmas seasons at Hexham Abbey.
Hexham is the only place in the North of England to be hosting the Edinburgh Lucia Choir for this unique event.
